A shower enclosure is designed to keep the water from your shower contained.  This ensures the water drains away quickly and does leak out into the surrounding area.  There are a range of shower enclosures on the market for you to choose from.

Size and Shape

You will need to consider the space you have available for your shower enclosure.  If the space is very tight then you can buy some compact designs that enable you to tuck the shower back into corners and under alcoves.  This will save floor space and provide you with a convenient and functional shower.

  • You do need to make sure you select a shower tray that can cope with the amount of water put out by the shower.
  • If not then you could risk that water overflowing whilst you are showering and leaking out onto the floor.
  • This will not only creating a slip hazard but it could also damage carpets, flooring and any ceilings underneath the shower rooms.
  • Shower trays are available from 35mm high right up to 185mm high.  If you have a power shower then you will need to choose the deeper options.
  • Power showers can put out over 27 litres of water per minute and this is a big volume to disperse.
  • Also make sure the outlet pipe is big enough to deal with this volume of water and consider increasing to 50mm.  This will help to prevent water backing up in the shower tray whilst you are showering.

Wetrooms

Wetrooms are becoming more popular in modern homes.  A wetroom is basically one big shower enclosure.

  • Instead of enclosing the shower in a small sealed space the whole room is designed to collect and funnel water.
  • The entire room will be waterproofed and the floor will slope down towards a central drain to quickly disperse the water.
  • Wetrooms can also include a toilet and basin.  They offer the chance to install some very impressive shower systems including body jets and rainfall shower heads.
  • Installing wetrooms is a professional job as it is extremely important they are completely water tight and that water can drain away quickly and effectively.
